<p>In onze darmen zit een microbioom (je darmflora), wat er ongeveer op neerkomt dat je een kluit van pak ‘m beet 1,5 kilo levende bacteriën daar hebt zitten. Er wordt gelukkig steeds meer bekend over hoe belangrijk je microbioom is voor je gezondheid. Misschien had je er nog nooit van gehoord, of misschien lees je dit onder het genot van een glaasje kombucha om die kleine ‘huisdieren’ de nodige gezonde voeding te geven. Want dat het belangrijk is om een beetje lief te zijn voor je darmen blijkt wel uit het feit dat héél veel buikpijn en darmklachten voorkomen kunnen worden door een gezonde darmflora. Maar het gaat veel verder: zelfs depressieve klachten kun je verminderen, overgewicht te lijf gaan en je hersenfuncties verbeteren door goed voor je microbioom te zorgen. Niet voor niets worden je darmen wel je tweede brein genoemd.</p>
<h3>Darm-hersen-as</h3>
<p>Tussen je darmen en je hersenen zit een regelrechte verbinding via de darm-hersenas en nervus vagus. Dat betekent dat informatie die via je hersenen binnenkomt, effect heeft op je darmen. Snap je meteen waarom je aan de race gaat als je superzenuwachtig bent, bijvoorbeeld. Er zijn om dezelfde reden talloze spreekwoorden die duidelijk maken hoe sterk de verbinding is tussen hersenen en darmen.</p>
<h3>Voeding voor je brein</h3>
<p>Andersom werkt het echter ook zo: alles wat je eet, is voeding voor je darmen. Je kunt hierin gezonde en minder gezonde keuzes maken. De minder gezonde keuzes, kunnen dus ook een ongezonde invloed uitoefenen op je hersenen. Je hebt bijvoorbeeld vast weleens gemerkt dat je moe en futloos wordt na het eten van suikerrijke en sterk bewerkte voeding. Op die manier hangen depressieve klachten en je microbioom ook samen.</p>
<h3>Gezond microbioom</h3>
<p>De wetenschap heeft zich (terecht) de laatste jaren volop gestort op deze nieuwe inzichten en de mogelijkheden die het geeft om hier zelf invloed op uit te oefenen. Want gelukkig zijn er veel manieren om je microbioom positief te stimuleren. Ben je in verwachting of wil je graag zwanger worden of heb je een kinderwens?
